Damaged desk of Clement O. Miniger, photograph

Description

A black and white photograph taken by Lawrence D. Heitt of the damaged desk and office of Chairman of the Board and company founder Clement O. Miniger during the Electric Auto-Lite Strike of May, 1934. Rocks and broken glass litter the office. When the Ohio National Guard was called on the scene of the strike, the strikers began to riot by throwing bricks and other debris at the troops. In addition to property damage, when the rioting was over, two were reported killed by gunfire and others injured by flying bricks and debris. The rioting ended on May 27th and the labor dispute was settled June 1, 1934. Clement O. Miniger (1874-1944) organized the Electric Auto-Lite Company in 1911 and in 1922 purchased the Willys Corporation.
