Title

Overturned and burned automobile in parking lot, photograph

Description

A black and white photograph taken by Lawrence D. Heitt of an overturned and burned-out vehicle left in a parking lot during the Electric Auto-Lite Strike of May, 1934. The automobile lays in an unpaved dirt lot among billboards advertising Lava Soap and other goods of that time. When the Ohio National Guard was called on the scene of the strike, the strikers began to riot by throwing bricks and other debris at the troops. In addition to property damage, when the rioting was over, two were reported killed by gunfire and others injured by flying bricks and debris. The rioting ended on May 27th and the labor dispute was settled June 1, 1934.
